Story of the Lantern Festival
A long, long time ago, wild beasts and ferocious (兇猛的) birds were a great threat to people's lives. So people always went out to hunt these beasts and birds. But one day, they accidentally (偶然地) killed a bird that was actually a magical bird that fell to the human world and lost its way. What's more, the bird was the favorite pet of the Heavenly Emperor (天帝). The Heavenly emperor was furious. As a revenge (報復), he ordered his soldiers to set fire on the human world on the 15th of the first lunar month (正月十五), and burn down everything.
But the Heavenly Emperor's daughter was very kind. She sneaked out (偷偷溜出來) from heaven and told people of the bad news. People were of course extremely scared. They didn't know what they could do to avoid their doom. Then one wise old man said: "There's something we can try. We can hang up bright lanterns, paint the front of our homes red, set off fireworks (放鞭炮) and build bonfires (篝火) on that day. This way, maybe the Heavenly Emperor would think that the fire has burnt down everything."
People were not sure whether this would work. But they followed the wise man's idea anyway. On the night of January15th, the Emperor looked down from Heaven and saw red light and fire everywhere, accompanied with loud bangs. He thought that his order had already been carried out, and so happily returned to his palace.
So of course, people survived. In order to commemorate this lucky escape, every year on the 15th day of the first lunar month, they would light up lanterns and set off fireworks. That's the story of the Lantern Festival.
