When I first started university, I remembered hearing about bone marrow(骨髓)donation during Freshman’s Week. Some students volunteers from a group called Marrow tried to convince me to attend an event so I could learn more about it. The word “bone” immediately made me think that donating would be a painful procedure, so I refused. Back then, there was no way I could have known three years later, I would be one of the many people that desperately needs a bone marrow donor to save their lives.
I am currently waiting to be matched with a donor and if I am lucky enough to find a good match, it will be this lovely stranger that saves my life. I received my cancer diagnosis in June. It is only at that time that I realized how ignorant I had been about the bone marrow donation process.
The process of donating stem cells is actually very simple. In 90% of cases, donors are asked to donate their blood stem cells, the other 10% will give their bone marrow. Lots of donors say that both these things are virtually pain free, and nothing to be scared about. Being a bone marrow donor should be something to be proud of, as every donor has an opportunity to save someone’s life!
At the moment I know that the doctors are busy searching for a match, I simply live every day in the hope that there will be a donor right for me. If I have an opportunity for life, I won’t waste it.
When I was a first year at university, I made the mistake of walking away from becoming a stem cell donor. Please don’t make the same mistake that I did. There are so many people out there, including myself, that need your help; and by undergoing a simple, pain-free procedure, you could have the chance to proudly say that you saved someone’s life.
24. Why did the author refuse to learn more about bone marrow donation before?

The trouble of having to charge(充電)your smartphone for hours a day could become a thing of the past.
British scientists have created a material that replaces the screen glass for phones, i-pad and smartwatches, but uses no power----meaning they could be charged weekly. The discovery is important because more than 90 percent of a device’s battery power illuminates(照明)the screen.
Technology firms have focused on improving battery life. But the British experts say dealing with the main power-using may give better results. Oxford University engineer Dr Peiman Hosseini, who invented the material, told the Sunday Telegraph: “ You have to charge smartwatches every night. But if you had smart glass, you could recharge it just once a week.”
The invention uses electrical pulses to create displays that require no power and can be viewed even in direct sunlight. Dr Hosseini’s company, Bodle Technologies, hopes to have a prototype(樣機)in a year.
Battery life is seen as a major obstruction for modern computing and technology. While the power of technology and lifestyle gadgets(小器件)has improved rapidly in recent years, batteries have not kept pace. The success of smart watches, including Apple’s version, is thought to depend on solving this problem because few users are willing to charge a watch every day.
Gadget firms are also desperate to solve the problem.
Apple, for example, is investigating using fuel cells to power its phones and laptops, and this year had gained a patent for a system that it claimed could power its gadget for weeks.
In 2012 US energy secretary Steven Chu called for a big push to improve batteries, challenging scientists to produce a battery with five times the capacity within five years.
Aside from mobile gadgets, improving battery technology is seen as being key to the success of electric cars, which currently have a limited journey before they must stop to be recharged.
28. Who invented the new material?
A. Energy secretary. B. Oxford University engineer.
C. Technology firms. D. Apple Corps.
29. What can we know about the invention?
A. It has gained a patent. B. It is popular with customers.
C. It is a kind of glass. D. It uses power to charge the phones.
30. The author uses the example of Apple in para7 to show________________.
A. what the key to success is
B. why Apple products are popular
C. how often batteries must be recharged
D. how gadget firms are making efforts to improve batteries
31. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. 90% of batteries will be replaced with smart glass.
B. It is likely that mobile phones will be recharged once a week.
C. Scientists are focusing on increasing the number of batteries.
D. Many users are willing to pay more for watches of Apple version.

Instagram is a fast, beautiful and fun way to share your life with friends and family. Take a picture or video, choose a filter(修圖)to transform its look and feel, and then post to Instagram—it’s that easy. You can even share to Facebook, Twitter and more. It’s a new way to see the world. So many photos of food are contained on Instagram—now a pop-up diner in London is taking advantage of this new trend by letting people settle the bill for their meals simply by uploading photos of their dishes to social networks.
I always thought people’s taking pictures of their food was kind of silly, but at this new pop-up restaurant in the UK, I’d probably do it too. “The Picture House” is the world’s first pay-by-photo restaurant. You order, click a photo of the food, share on Instagram and eat for free!
The restaurant belongs to frozen food giant(巨人)Birds Eye, who came up with the idea to cash in on people’s addiction with photographing food and sharing the pictures online. They conducted a survey and found out that more than half of the British population regularly took pictures of their meals. So they realized it was a better way to advertise their new dining range.
The pop-up diner was open in Soho,London for three days in May, and is now moving to other major UK cities. They serve two-course meals that customers don’t have to pay for, if they photo and Instagram it.
The restaurant is a part of Birds Eye’s “Food for Life” campaign, a new marketing project that aims at changing the way people look at frozen food. “Taking photos of food enables people to show off and to share their mealtime moments—from the everyday to the special, ”said marketing director Margaret Jobling.
The reaction to the Picture House has been great so far And the pay-by-picture concept has proven to be an effective way. Alternative payment methods are actually gaining popularity among a lot of businesses. Last year in a cafe in Germany customers pay by how much time they spend there, not by what they eat.
32. Instagram probably is________.
A. a program used to share photos B. a campaign of “Food for Life”
C. a restaurant free of charge D. a new marketing project
33. What can we infer from the passage?
A. The Picture House was opened in Scotland
B. Lots of British people like taking photos of their meals.
C. The Picture House is the world’s first pay-by-photo restaurant.
D. The British people’s response to the Picture House is quite cold.
34. “The Picture House” encourages sharing photos of its food to_______.
A. raise the price of frozen food B. create a new social media trend
C. attract more customers D. reward the regular customers
35. Which of the following can serve as the best title for the passage?
A. Food for Life B. The Pop-up Diner
C. No Need to Pay D. Pay by Picture

Every one complains. Even if you argue that you are the happiest person in the world, you still complain sometimes. Sometimes you complain: without even realizing ill, but rarely is it ever helpful. 36 Here are some tips to stop complaint and give up the negative thoughts:
37
When you find yourself thinking or saying a negative comment about something or someone, stop and force yourself to say something positive instead. Seek the help of a cheerful friend to change you when you complain and help you to see the positive in the situation.
Make a list of things we are grateful for.
We often complain about the things we don't have without noticing those things we already have. Be grateful for what we have in our life because we are lucky simply for being ourselves. 38
Learn to adapt to the changes.
There are many things we can't change. 39 Always find the positive side of each situation, regardless of however difficult the situation is, with parents' and friends' support, we can survive any life changes.
Allow yourself to express your feelings every once in a while.
Constantly ignored negative thoughts could add up if you are really going through a hard time, don't be afraid to share your feelings with close friends or family members or see a therapist.
Find what makes you happy.
40 Maybe it is time to make the hard decision to move on to another job or career. Uncover what your biggest complaints are about and see if you can change the situation to make you happy. Stop complaining, focus on the positive, and be kind always!
A. Change the way you think
B. Make positive people friends
C. The best and only thing we can do is to accept them
D. Are you constantly complaining about your present job?
E. Sometimes this list can be easy, full of hobbies you enjoy
F. So how can you manage to force yourselves to end complaining?
G. Set down things we are thankful for and we'll see that we don't have any reason to complain.

作文參考范文
Good morning, everyone! It’s my honor to be here to make a short speech. Recently I have found that some of our classmates can’t study efficiently. Some can’t help falling asleep in class, because they often study too late into the night. Others seldom have sports, which surely does harm to their health.
As we know, enough sleep is of great importance for us senior 3 students. We can concentrate our mind in class with sufficient sleep, so we should try to make wise use of our time, striking a balance between work and leisure. Besides, doing proper exercise every day can benefit us a lot, keeping fit, reducing stress and so on. Let’s spare some time to do all kinds of sports. And only in this way can we keep a good mood and study well.
That’s all. Thank you for listening!
