Cell phones:Is there a cancer link?
Could your cell phone give you cancer? Whether it could or not,some people are worrying about the possibility that phones,power lines and Wi-Fi could be responsible for a range of illnesses,from rashes to brain tumors.
Some say there is evidence to support the growing anxieties.David Carpenter,a professor of environmental health sciences at the university at Albany,in New York,thinks there’s a greater than 95 percent chance that power lines can cause childhood leukemia(白血病).Also there’s a greater than 90 percent chance that cell phones can cause brain tumors.“It’s apparent now that there’s a real risk,”said Carpenter.

Can you believe your eyes?A recent experiment suggests that the answer to that question may depend on your age.
Martin Doherty,a psychologist at the University of Stirling in Scotland,led the team of scientists.In this experiment,Doherty and his team tested the perception(觀察力)of some people,using pictures of some orange circles.The researchers showed the same pictures to two groups of people.The first group included 151 children aged 4 to 10,and the second group included 24 a—dults aged 18 to 25.
The first group of pictures showed two orange circles alone on a white background.One of the circles was larger than the other,and these people were asked to identify the larger one.Four-year-olds identified the correct circle 79 percent of the time.Adults identified the correct circle 95 percent of the time.
Next,both groups were shown pictures where the orange circles,again of different sizes,were surrounded by gray circles.Here’s where the trick lies.In some of the pictures,the smaller orange circle was surrounded by even smaller gray circles—making the orange circle appear larger than the other orange circle,which was the real larger one.And the larger orange circle was surrounded by even bigger gray circles—so it appeared to be smaller than the real smaller orange circle.
When young children aged 4 to 6 looked at these tricky pictures,they weren’t fooled—they were still able to find the bigger circle with roughly the same accuracy as before.Older children and adults,on the other hand,did not do as well.Older children often identified the smaller circle as the larger one,and adults got it wrong most of the time.

“Sesame Street” has been called “the longest street in the world”. That is because the television program by that name can now be seen in so many parts of the world. That program became one of American’s exports soon after it went on the air in New York in 1969.

In June, 2007, a group of students from eight high schools in Winnipeg, the capital of Canada’s Manitoba province, will begin test-launching (試發(fā)射) a satellite the size of a Rubik’s cube.
The one-kilogram Win-Cub satellite, named for its home city and its shape, will be put into low orbit. Once in space, it can perform for a few months or up to several years, communicating information that could help find the signs of earthquakes.
There are 80 similar satellite projects worldwide, but this is the first high-school based program of its kind in Canada. 30 Manitoba high school students are having a hand in designing and building the satellite, in cooperation with aerospace (航空航天的) experts and 10 students from the University of Manitoba, and with support from two other organizations.
The Win-Cube project is not something that goes on a piece of paper; it is real-world engineering, allowing high school students to have an opportunity to learn more about the exciting world of engineering through their participation in this challenging program. It is also taken as a wonderful example of the unique partnerships within Manitoba. Designing, building and launching a satellite with high-school participation will bring this world-class educational project into reality and Manitoba closer to space.

Born in Chicago in 1902, brought up and schooled in Nebraska, the 19-year-old college graduate Ralph Tyler became hooked on teaching while teaching as a science teacher in South Dakota and changed his major from medicine to education.
