  Dear Madam,

Welcome back to school. My child is so happy to be in your class this year. We know you care so much about your students. I want to tell you a little bit about my child. Although he really loves to learn, he is somewhat anxious about being back in school again.

My child is thought to be gifted and that has brought some unexpected challenges to him and our family. To many people, being gifted means he will do very well in school, but that hasn’t always been true for him. He is just a kid thinking differently, and he sometimes struggles in school. Last year, school wasn’t easy for him for a few reasons.

He may be ahead a few grade levels in some subjects, but not in all subjects. He just doesn’t do better in all areas all the time. And although he may seem older than his years, he doesn’t always behave like you would think he should. I’m sure you know how gifted children can be emotionally immature –that is exactly my kid.

Also, he can be really intense in class when you are teaching one of his favorite topics. He may raise his hand often and constantly talk about what he thinks about it. I’ll apologize in advance because he will also likely challenge you on information or facts which he feels are not quite right especially when it’s a topic he is hooked on. He is not being impolite and he isn’t just being a know-it-all, or a show-off, he is really just very excited to be learning about a subject he feels strong about. He just gets carried away!

Last year, he was teased about looking like a know-it-all in school by some of his classmates, which hurts him A LOT. Being teased is part of his fear of going back to school. He fears being called a show-off at school and he feels like he doesn’t fit in. His teacher said he often kept to himself and chose to work alone. I know as a teacher, you are incredibly busy, but could you keep an eye out for anyone teasing him or if he seems to be keeping to himself too much?

Lastly, his therapist(理療師) mentioned that because of the teasing and maybe because he was bored last year in school, he is showing signs of becoming an underachiever. Please let me know if his grades start slipping.

Thank you for taking the time to read and understand about my child .Don’t hesitate to call or email me if there are any problems with him at school. Believe me, we know very well how sensitive, emotional and intense he can be.

I hope you have a wonderful school year!

  Sincerely,

  Mom of a Gifted Child

It’s said that you don’t know a man until you walk a mile in his shoes. And you also don’t know what it’s like for older people to travel until you accompany one on a trip.

After flying with my elderly father from Washington, D.C., to L.A. in July, I began to realize that a companion has important tasks that can make a journey easier for older people. Most of the tips have to do with flying, such as packing snacks, putting medicines in carry-ons and taking a light blanket, which was invaluable to my father because he tended to get cold.

I booked nonstop tickets on JetBlue to avoid tiring, confusing connections, and we flew directly into small, manageable Long BeachAirport. Even though my father could walk, I arranged with the airline for wheelchair assistance, which meant we got on board first.

When I took him back to the airport for his return flight to Washington, I got permission from JetBlue to wait with him at the gate instead of saying goodbye at the security checkpoint. I wished he’d had a first-class seat and access to a comfortable airline club. Better yet, I wish I had flown with him both ways. As I watched the attendant wheel him to the lift that took him from the tarmac(飛機跑道) to the plane, I felt like an anxious mom sending her child to school for the first time.

Things can go wrong on a plane trip. And then there is the horrifying story about Joe and Margie Dabney, who flew from Indianapolis to LAX in December. When they landed at Dallas-FortWorthInternationalAirport, a wheelchair attendant met them to help with a connection. But somehow Margie, who had Alzheimer’s disease, disappeared.

I didn’t need to worry about my father wandering away; at 82, his mind was sharper than mine. But his hearing was poor, so I worried about what would happen if he missed an important announcement. Fortunately, everything went just fine. Careful planning made the trip successful.

Next time I travel with a senior, I’ll know better. I hope there will be a next time.

  60. What can we learn about the author from the passage?

  A. He advised his father to join in the club.

  B. He booked a first class return flight for his father.

D.He flew with his father from WashingtonD.C. to L.A.

61.The author felt anxious when he __________.

  A. saw his father off at the airport

  B. reached the Long Beach airport

  C. missed the airport announcement

  D. said goodbye at the security checkpoint

  62. According to the author’s experience, we know that _____________.

  A. taking a trip does great good to seniors

  B. it is a pleasant experience to travel with seniors

  C. to have a long journey with seniors is unpractical

  D. a good arrangement ensures seniors to take a nice trip

  C

  Benefits of Cross-Country Skiing

Cross-country skiing can be enjoyed by a wide range of students, from the youngest kindergartners to those secondary students. Itis really a fun activity, providingstudents a gentle workoutoutsidein winter. While having fun, students can gain physical and mental benefits .

The physical benefits of cross-country skiing are well known. If we look at Olympic cross- country skiers, we can see the positive effects on the body that result from training for cross-country skiing. The averagebest female cross-country skier carries 11 percent body fat, and

best male skiers carry 5 percent. These percentages are well below the average for people who

are considered to be athletic-17 percent for females and 10 percent for males. The high number of calories burned while skiing helps to keep skiers slim in a healthy and attractive way.

Cross-country skiing is also an efficient way to exercise a large number of muscles at once. Because skiers use ski poles as a means ofpropulsion, the force that drives skiers forward, the upper body gets much more of workout. Of course, the leg muscles also do their fair share. People who use cross-country skiing as a workout over several weeks will discover that the muscles of their entire body increase in strength.

Cross-country skiing on a regular basis has a tremendous effect on a person’s cardiovascular

system. In addition to gaining strength in the muscles of the upper and lower body, people who use cross-country skiing as a workout method over several weeks will also discover that their heart is stronger. A strong heart pumps more efficiently, sending out more blood to the muscles with each contraction(收縮). Through weeks of skiing, people often discover that their resting heart rate has decreased. Highly trained Olympic cross-country skiers have resting heart rates between 28 and 40 beats per minute. Compare that to the resting heart rate of the average person, which is 60 to 80 beats per minute!

The benefits of cross-country skiing extend beyond overall general health. A lot of evidence exists indicating that regular physical activity increases the release of mood-lifting endorphins (內(nèi)啡肽) in the body. After one of the energetic and fun skiing lessons, students will be smiling and laughing; they will be relaxed and in a better mood than when they started class. Students will leave class with a sense of accomplishment, knowing that they have developed new skills in a fun activity.

Cross-country skiing is a great way to work the total body. Now more and more students are taking part in this exercise outside during the winter months. They are enjoying it and benefiting from it!

  63. The underlined word “workout” means_______.

  A. manner B. exercise C. application D. opportunity

  64. According to the passage, we can learn that cross-country skiing ______.

  A. requires the use of most muscle groups

  B. offers studentsa unique way to keep fit

  C. can increase the athletes’ resting heart rates

  D. can balance out the skiers’ increased calories

  65. How does the author prove the benefits of skiing in the fifth paragraph?

  A. By making comments. B. By giving examples.

  C. By making comparisons. D. By giving explanations.

66.Which of the following shows the development of ideas in the passage?

CP: Central point P: Point Sp: Sub-point (次要點) C: Conclusion

  D

There are two main types of office layouts used by most companies around the world: Landscape Office and Enclosed Office. A landscape office lacks privacy, however, this office layout is more beneficial than an enclosed office for employees to improve work efficiency(效率) and productivity.

Some people might desire an undisturbed workplace . According to the survey collected from a company with the two kinds of office layouts, most of managers prefer a workplace where they can concentrate on their work and make a clear thinking. However, managers that possess their own enclosed offices might have the feeling of being distant from their clerks, which leads to high pressure. Meanwhile, employees tend to be nervous when they have conversations with their managers in an obviouslyhierarchical(等級制的) environment. In contrast, a landscape office makes it easier and more pleasant for employees to communicate with their managers or their colleagues; this would result in speeding up work efficiency and productivity.

Besides, greater interaction is beneficial for employees to build up friendship in a landscape office. This can be proved by the experiment of Brookes and Kaplan. They recorded the attitudes and opinions of 120 employees toward their enclosed office before they moved to the landscape office, and then after nine months they were tested again. The researchers discovered that those employees performed positive changes in group sociability. When people have better group sociability, they experience a better team work and efficient cooperation, which surely promotes work productivity.

Some opponents claim that a landscape office would lead to the decline of the value of work satisfaction and motivation from employees. However, the result from other researchers remained controversial; in their opinion there are several factors which affect job satisfaction and motivation. 600 Canadian federal government department workers who were housed at a modern landscape office and were surveyed gave both negative and positive feedback. They admitted that they felt the sense of belonging to a team or a working community, which mainly contributes to job satisfaction. Motivation is also increased by a sense of responsibility for and loyalty to a team.

Admittedly, there are some advantages that only enclosed offices possess. However, a landscape office can combine the features of the traditional enclosed office, for example, designing the independent meeting room to decrease noise from discussion. Although the benefits of a landscape office outweigh those of an enclosed office, which layout is better should be decided by the characteristics of the people and the type of work they do.

  67. What is mainly talked about in the passage?

  A. Colleague cooperation and its motivation.

  B. Group sociability and its productivity.

  C. Working environment and its effect.

  D. Office privacy and its atmosphere.

  68. Whathas the significant effect on productivity according to Paragraph 2?

  A. Job satisfaction. B. Relaxed atmosphere.

  C. Group sociability. D. Undisturbed workplace.

  69. What can be inferred from the passage?

  A. Enclosed office leads to individual creativity.

  B. Different working stylesin enclosed office is encouraged.

  C. Landscape office contributes to effective conversations.

  D. Frequent communication in landscape office results in high pressure.

  70. What is the author’s attitude towards office layouts?

  A. Objective. B. Casual. C.Optimistic. D. Sceptical.

  三、Possible version

  Dear Jim,

I’m happy to know that you will come to China to study and stay with a host family. Congratulations! It will be a great chance to learn Chinese culture.

However. I would like to remind you that some cultural shocks do exist. Take greeting people for example, when you first meet someone in your country, you might hug and kiss him or her.But in China it is not a common practice.I think the best way of greetingis to shake hands. Shaking hands is a friendly greeting in Chinese situation.

If you are unsure what to do, it is wise to remember the saying “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.”andyou’ll be quite well accepted by Chinese.

Hope you have a pleasant stay in China.

  Best wishes,

  Li Hua

  四、One possible version

Last month, our class took part in the Campus Poetry Contest held in our school.

Our headmaster announced the start of the contest and the topic–Our Colorful School Life. He also required that every class should create one poem of any length and any type and thenpresent it in front of the whole school. We listened attentively, showing great interest.

When we were back to our classroom, we discussedwhat to write about our poem. Some of my classmates contributed brilliant ideas, others set about writing. Right after our poem was completed,we started to practice for the coming show. Everybody worked hard and did our bit. Our teacher also offered us help.

Finally the big day came. The hall was full of excitement. When it was our turn, I, standing on the stage with my classmates, led the reading of our poem.

In the end, when our headmaster announced the winners, the whole place burst out with clapping and cheering.

  It was really fun!

  聽力錄音稿

  Text 1

W: What did you buy for Edward’s birthday?

M: A sweater, but I looked at a lot of shirts and even some gloves before I made up my mind.

  Text 2

M: What type of music do you enjoy?

W: I love jazz, blues and classical music. Jazz is my favourite.

M: Hmmm, I prefer pop music.

W: Pop music seems so trendy.

  M: That's true, but I don't understand jazz.

  Text 3

W: So we’re going to the Smith’s again in our vacation?

M: Yes, but I can’t make up my mind whether to go by road or by rail. The train is generally less effort, but it is a terrible walk from the nearest station to the village.

  W: I think we’d better drive there.

  M: All right.

  Text 4

M: Can we go somewhere and talk about your trip? It’s noisy in the office.

W: Shall we go to the Café upstairs?

M: It’s quiet there, but I need to get some fresh air.

W: Well, there’s a park nearby. It’s usually not crowded this time of day.

  M: Brilliant. Let’s go.

  Text 5

W: Excuse me, Sir, would it be possible for me to have a few more minutes to review my notes before the quiz?

M: Please feel free to study for a little while and ask for help if you have any questions. The quiz will begin in 20 minutes.

  W: Thank you very much.

  Text 6

  W: Next!

  M: Here's my ticket.

W: Please step through the scanner.

M: (beep, beep, beep) What’s wrong?

W: Please step to the side.

  M: Certainly.

W: Do you have any coins or a cellphone in your pocket?

M: No, but I have some keys.

W: Ah, that’s the problem. Put your keys in this container and walk through the scanner again.

  M: Okay.

W: Excellent. No problem. Remember to unload your pockets before you go through security next time.

M: I’ll do that. Thank you.

  W: Have a nice day.

  Text 7

W: Hi, Jack, how are you today?

  M: I’m great and you?

W: Very busy!I’m going to wash the car. Then I’ll have to do a lot!

M: What will you have to do?

W: Well, first of all, I have to do the shopping. We don’t have anything to eat at home.

  M: ... and then?

W: My son, Johnny has a basketball game this afternoon. I’m driving him to the game. What are you doing today?

M: I’m not doing much. I’m meeting some friends for a picnic, but other than that, I don’t have much to do today.

W: You’re so lucky! I’ll have to leave now. See you later.

  M: See you later.

  Text 8

M: What shall we do tomorrow, my dear?

W: I have a city guide right here. Let me take a look. Hmmm…The bicycle museum looks interesting! Why don’t we first visit that in the morning?

M: OK. I like that idea---I’d love to see some cool bicycles. What would you think of visiting the zoo in the afternoon ? I’ve heard that the zoo here has some very unusual animals.

W: Well, dear, you know I’m not really interested in animals. I’d actually love to do some shopping. The guidebook recommends several good shops for buying local items.

M: Sweetheart, I don’t have much cash left.

W: OK, dear. Well, why don’t we take the bus down to the shore in the afternoon? We could go for a walk along the beach. It would be nice and cool next to the water.

  M: That’s a good plan. I like it.

  Text 9

Good evening. I’m Myra Watson and this is the news at 10.

The headlines. A six-year-old boy had an accident at a frozen lake in ApplewoodCountryPark. The boy was playing on the ice in the middle of the lake with his friends, when the ice suddenly broke and he fell into the freezing water. Michael, a young man was walking near the lake and saw the accident. He immediately dropped onto his stomach and climbed to the hole. By staying flat on the ice, Michael was able to safely pull the boy out of water. By the time Michael rolled them both back to the shore, the boy was no longer breathing. Michael performed CPR, and soon the boy started breathing again. Michael wrapped him in his own winter coat and then took him to the nearest hospital. We are happy to report that the boy is safe and doing well.

To avoid such accidents, everyone is advised not to attempt to walk on the icy lakes. Parents are advised to watch and direct their children closely.

Now over to Suzie for the weather.

  Text 10

W: Yes, I would! What kind of information do you need?

M: Oh, just some basic contact information. Your name, please?

  W: 17Maple Stress.

M: OK. What kind of volunteer work do you think you’re suited for?

W: Well, I am good at cooking, and I think I am quite patient with old people.

M: Great. We need help to take care of elderly homeless people. Anything else?

W: Let me think. Oh, yes---yard sales! I often organize yard sales. Wouldn’t that be a good way to raise some money for the Homeless Shelter?

M: Of course. OK, I will present your application at the next office meeting. We look forward to having you work alongside us.
