Hello, good morning everyone. I'm Zhang jinsong from the political class of the Institute of political science and public management. Today I'm very pleased to stand here to deliver a speech for you all. The topic of my speech is - Art.
Now I'd love to propose my first question - What is artOh, Luxin, What is art
According to our textbook 1 on page 108, we can learn that art is often considered the process or product of deliberately arranging elements in a way that appeals to the senses or emotions.
Ok, a standard answer. Well, I just want to put forward my own point of view. My simple view is that art belongs to the category of beauty and it's a kind of thing that can bring pleasant enjoyment to one's heart. This is my own comprehension of art.
As we all know, art can be classified into many different kinds of parts. Such as, music, literature, film, sculpture and painting and so on. There is no doubt that we can benefit a lot from these various forms of art. Now I want to put forward my second question, Zifeng, What benefits do you think art can bring to us
Uh, as far as I'm concerned, I believe that what art can bring to us is mainly a sense of enjoyment. And it can add a baptism and sublimation to our hearts.
Yeah, I cannot agree more. But I still have something that can be added. Firstly, art provides us with a chance to know something about some great masters' works, broadening our horizons. What's more, art helps us improve our connoisseurship and raise the level of our aesthetic judgment. Finally, art can also help us adjust our mood, allowing us leading a healthy and pleasant life in the long run. For example, if we are down, a piece of gentle music will be a not bad comfort to us.
Since art has so beneficial an impact on us, thus, I will raise my last question. Onedan, How to raise a person's artistic accomplishments, letting him or her move forward smoothly under the influence of art
I think attending art classes would be helpful. And we can also go to art museums, galleries, the master-pieces showrooms and etc. to appreciate many different kinds of art forms. This is my answer to your question.
Yes, you are a bright girl. In addition to what you have just said, we can also appreciate some brilliant master-pieces through TV, internet and so on in daily lives, even create art works ourselves. Besides, We can also put forward our understanding about a specific work of art to communicate with others, promoting our awareness of art through communication.
Ok, my speech is over in the end. Thank you for your listening patiently.
Ladies and gentlemen:
I thank you for being here.
I'm going to get straight to the point.
All traditional learning methods are futile.
Most college graduates still can't speak fluent English. This proves English students aren't learning.
Some people seem to speak English well.
Chinese think these people speak great English
because they don't know the difference.
American think these people speak great English becausethey are non-nativeEnglish speakers anyway.
Don't think you can learn English by hanging around Americans. Don't think you can master English by going abroad.
WhyBecause what you learn is vague and limitied.
You pick up a little here today.
You pick up a little there tomorrow.
You end up saying almost the same thing every day.
English is like an ocean.
There is no limit to what you can learn.
You cannot learn aimlessly.
You should learn to speak first.
Make speaking English your number one priority.
Once you start to speak, the rest will be easy.
Learning to speak English is not a big deal.
It's not that difficult.
It's no more than a speaking technique.
It's just like children learning to speak.
They momic their mother's voices.
When they're alone, they speak to themselves.
We started off the wrong way right from the beginning. We don't need to learn grammar.
We don't need to analyze sentences.
Children don't need to learn how to write.
They don't need to learn K.K. phonetics.
They don't even need to leran the ABCs
before they can speak English.
All you have to do is listen to the CD and follow it. Learn through intense repetition.
Speak to yourself from dawn to dust.
With this method, you'll enjoy speaking English. You'll discover it's lots of fun.
It will become your passion.
You'll enjoy interacting.
You'll look forward to meeting people.
Breaking the ice will be a piece of cake.
Today, I speak from this podium a final time as your president. As I depart, I want to thank all of you - students, faculty, alumni and staff - with whom I have been privileged to work over these past years. Some of us have had our disagreements, but I know that which unites us transcends that which divides us. I leave with a full heart, grateful for the opportunity I have had to lead this remarkable institution.
Since I delivered my inaugural address, 56 months ago, I have learned an enormous amount-about higher education, about leadership, and also about myself. Some things look different to me than they did five years ago. The world that today’s Harvard’s graduates are entering is a profoundly different one than the world administrators entered.
It is a world where opportunities have never been greater for those who know how to teach children to read, or those who know how to distribute financial risk; never greater for those who understand the cell and the pixel; never greater for those who can master, and navigate between, legal codes, faith traditions, computer platforms, political viewpoints.
It is also a world where some are left further and further behind - those who are not educated, those trapped in poverty and violence, those for whom equal opportunity is just a hollow phrase.
Scientific and technological advances are enabling us to comprehend the furthest reaches of the cosmos, the most basic constituents of matter, and the miracle of life.
At the same time, today, the actions, and inaction, of human beings imperil not only life on the planet, but the very life of the planet.
Globalization is making the world smaller, faster and richer. Still, 9/11, avian flu, and Iran remind us that a smaller, faster world is not necessarily a safer world.
Our world is bursting with knowledge - but desperately in need of wisdom. Now, when sound bites are getting shorter, when instant messages crowd out essays, and when individual lives grow more frenzied, college graduates capable of deep reflection are what our world needs.
For all these reasons I believed - and I believe even more strongly today - in the unique and irreplaceable mission of universities.
Universities are where the wisdom we cannot afford to lose is preserved from generation to generation. Among all human institutions, universities can look beyond present norms to future possibilities, can look through current considerations to emergent opportunities.
And among universities, Harvard stands out. With its great tradition, its iconic reputation, its remarkable network of 300,000 alumni, Harvard has never had as much potential as it does now.
And yet, great and proud institutions, like great and proud nations at their peak, must surmount a very real risk: that the very strength of their traditions will lead to caution, to an inward focus on prerogative and to a complacency that lets the world pass them by.
And so I say to you that our University today is at an inflection point in its history. At such a moment, there is temptation to elevate comfort and consensus over progress and clear direction, but this would be a mistake. The University’s matchless resources - human, physical, financial - demand that we seize this moment with vision and boldness. To do otherwise would be a lost opportunity. We can spur great deeds that history will mark decades and even centuries from now. If Harvard can find the courage to change itself, it can change the world.
