Bike sharing have become popular words in cities from Cape Town to Shanghai to Melbourne. Planners, politicians and media keep showing off their benefits: reducing pollution, congestion, travel costs and oil dependence, while improving public health. Bike sharing also helps make cities appear modern, dynamic and world-wide—qualities much sought after by the creative class.
But what makes for a successful public bike-sharing program? This is an important question because installing one requires significant public and private investment and adjustment to the built environment.
While many programs have been launched among much praise, often their popularity has soon declined. Many end up operating at a financial loss and depend on other profitable enterprises to cross-subsidize(交叉補(bǔ)貼) them. Some have resulted in thrown-away bikes becoming an eyesore.
Understanding which factors enhance or stop public bike sharing is critical in helping cities decide whether such a program is workable, before considering what design and sitting will work best.
Drawing on current knowledge, we discuss the importance of the local landscape, climate, cycling infrastructure (基礎(chǔ)設(shè)施) and land use. We also touch on other factors, such as the legal environment and the characteristics of the bike-sharing program itself.
Take natural environment for example. Two natural environment factors are known to affect participation: hilliness and weather. Hilliness discourages balanced bike-sharing use, as users avoid returning bicycles to stations on hilltops. Those stations end up being empty, while stations on flat areas are often full, so users cannot find a station to return their bikes
As for weather, ideal temperature ranges vary by the climate zone. Case studies show warm and dry weather encourages public bike-sharing use. Rain and strong wind
reduce the frequency of trips. However, some approaches, such as providing sheltered, shaded, or even heated or cooled cycling infrastructure, could prove useful.
24. What can we infer about bike sharing from Paragraph 1?
A. It has no disadvantage. B. It is welcomed worldwide.
C. It can solve every problem. D. It is the symbol of modern cities.
25. What is the current situation of bike-sharing programs?
A. Many of them run at a loss.
B. Most of them make huge profits.
C. They are the most promising business.
D. Their development is determined by public investment.
26. Why does the author mention the natural environment?
A. To show user’s interest in various natural environment.
B. To show the decisive function of natural environment.
C. To show the necessity of bike-sharing programs.
D. To show the significance of some factors.
27. Which of the following might increase bike-sharing use?
A. Hilliness. B. Attractive bikes.
C. Rain and strong wind. D. Perfect cycling infrastructure.

For many, music is as important to the human experience as eating and breathing. We hear music everywhere—at home, the gym, parties and stores. But what kind of music do we prefer to listen to, and when and why do our musical preferences change?
The relationship between the change of seasons and musical preferences was the focus of a study led by psychologist Terry Pettijohn. He and his team based their research on a previous study that examined the relationship between popular music preferences and the Environmental Security Hypothesis(假設(shè)). The results showed that over time, when social and financial conditions were more risky, the songs of the year that were slower, longer, more comforting and serious were most popular. And during periods in which social and financial conditions were generally stable, the result was opposite.
Building on these findings, Pettijohn and his team wondered if the Hypothesis could also be applied to the change of seasons. For college students, the participants in this study, autumn begins at the start of the school year. Gone are the carefree days of summer, when school is out. Winter means colder temperatures, shorter days, and, in many places in the country, snow. Spring, however, is a different story. It represents a fresh start and when clocks spring forward, we gain an extra hour of daylight. As students walk into summer, they’re absorbed in the sunshine and social activities—
and enjoy a break from school.
But do changing seasonal conditions influence musical preferences? To answer this question, the researchers designed two studies. What did they find? Both groups of college students favored more serious music during the seasons of fall and winter, and more active and energetic music during the spring and summer seasons. And these findings, Pettijohn argues, have practical significances.
28. The purpose of the question raised in Paragraph 1 is to ________.
A. present a different opinion on music
B. prove where to listen to music matters
C. stress the importance of music to humans
D. introduce the topic on musical preferences
29. What influences a person’s choice of music types according to the previous study?
A. Whether one has enough free time.
B. Whether one lives in a stable situation.
C. Whether one is exposed to sunlight.
D. Whether one chooses to change his life.
30. What does Paragraph 3 imply?
A. Students aren’t fond of school in any season.
B. Spring has a special meaning to people.
C. The Hypothesis disagrees with Pettijohn’s studies.
D. The length of summer time is longer than that of winter time.
31. How does Pettijohn feel about the findings of his studies?
A. It’s unexpected. B. It’s humorous.
C. It’s discouraging. D. It’s significant.

There was a rich merchant(商人)who had 4 wives. He loved the 4th wife the most. He gave her nothing but the best. He also loved the 3rd wife very much. He’s very proud of her and always wanted to show her off to his friends. He too, loved his 2nd wife. If the merchant faced some problems, he always turned to his 2nd wife and she would always help him out.
Now, the merchant’s 1st wife has made great contributions in maintaining his wealth and business as well as taking care of the household. However, the merchant did not love the first wife and although she loved him deeply, he hardly took notice of her.
One day, the merchant fell ill. Before long, he knew that he was going to die soon. Thus, he asked the 4th wife, “I loved you most. Now that I’m dying, will you follow me and keep me company?”
“No way!” replied the 4th wife and she turned away without another word. The 3rd and 2nd wife gave him the same answer. Then a voce called out: “I’ll leave with you. I’ll follow you no matter where you go.” The merchant looked up and said, “I should have taken much better care of you while I could have!”
Actually, we all have 4 wives in our lives. The 4th wife is our body. No matter how much time and effort we spend in making it look good, it’ll leave us when we die.
Our 3rd wife is our possessions, status and wealth. When we die, they all go to others.
The 2nd wife is our family and friends. No matter how close they had been there for us when we’re alive, the furthest they can stay by us is up to the grave(墳?zāi)?.
The 1st wife is in fact our soul, often ignored in our search of material, wealth and pleasure. Guess what? It is actually the only thing that follows us wherever we go. We are not to ignore it. Perhaps it’s a good idea to develop and strengthen it now rather than to wait until we’re on our death bed to cry.
32. Which of the merchant’s wives devotes herself to him most?
A. the first one B. the second one
C. the third one D. the fourth one
33. If the merchant is in trouble, what is he likely to do?
A. He often deals with the problems himself.
B. He will ask his second wife for help
C. He will rid of the trouble with the first wife
D. Nobody will help him
34. From the passage, we can infer that____________.
A. we shouldn’t marry four wives
B. only one wife is our best choice
C. The merchant prefers his wives to his possessions
D. our soul is more valuable than anything else
35. In the last paragraph, the underlined word “it” refers to ___________.
A. body B. wealth C. soul D. pleasure

Dear WWF,
I’m Li Hua, one of a high school students. I am writing to inform you of the situation where the bird s are living. Some people are catching the lovely birds in the woods on the top of the mountain in our area. What’s worse, a few people even put birds on tables for dinner
It is known that animals and bird s are human beings’ friends. We are to live harmoniously with them. For one thing, they can catch pests of the plants for farmers. For another, without birds our forests would not be lively and our environment would miss a friendly member.
In order to protect birds from being caught or killed, we should widely spread the laws of animal protection .Besides, education and raising people’s awareness are effective measures.
Yours sincerely

I was blind, but I was ashamed of it if it was known. I refused to use a white stick and hated asking for help. After all, I was a teenage girl, and I couldn’t bear people to look at me and think I was not like them. I must have been a terrible danger on the roads. Coming across me wandering through the traffic, motorists probably would have to stop rapidly on their brakes. Apart from that, there were all sorts of disasters that used to occur on the way to and from work.
One evening, I got off the bus about halfway home where I had to change buses, and as usual I ran into something. “I’m awfully sorry,” I said and stepped forward only to run into it again. When it happened a third time, I realized I had been apologizing to a lamppost. This was just one of the stupid things that constantly happened to me. So I carried on and found the bus stop, which was a request stop, where the bus wouldn’t stop unless passengers wanted to get on or off. No one else was there and I had to guess if the bus had arrived.
Generally in this situation, because I hated showing I was blind by asking for help, I tried to guess at the sound. Sometimes I would stop a big lorry and stand there feeling stupid as it drew away. In the end, I usually managed to swallow my pride and ask someone at the stop for help.
But at this particular evening no one joined me at the stop; it seemed that everyone had suddenly decided not to travel by bus. Of course I heard plenty of buses pass, or I thought I did. But because I had given up stopping them for fear of making a fool of myself, I let them all go by. I stood there alone for half an hour without stopping one. Then I gave up. I decided to walk on to the next stop.
24. The girl refused to ask for help because she thought_________.
A. she might be recognized B. asking for help looked silly
C. she was normal and independent D. being found blind was embarrassing
25. After the girl got off the bus that evening, she_________.
A. began to run B. hit a person as usual
C. hit a lamppost by accident D. was picked up by somebody
26. What was the problem with guessing at the sound to stop a bus?
A. Other vehicles also stopped there.
B. It was unreliable for making judgments.
C. More lorries than buses responded to the girl.
D. It took too much time for the girl to catch the bus.
27. Finally the girl decided to walk to the next stop, hoping__________.
A. to find people there for help B. to find more buses there
C. to find the bus by herself there D. to find people more helpful there
C
When you make a mistake, big or small, cherish it like it’s the most precious thing in the world. Because in some ways, it is.
Most of us feel bad when we make mistakes, beat ourselves up about it, feel like failures, get mad at ourselves.
And that’s only natural: most of us have been taught from a young age that mistakes are bad, that we should try to avoid mistakes. We’ve been scolded when we make mistakes—at home, school and work. Maybe not always, but probably enough times to make feeling bad about mistakes an unconscious reaction.
Yet without mistakes, we could not learn or grow. If you think about it that way, mistakes should be cherished and celebrated for being one of the most amazing things in the world: they make learning possible; they make growth and improvement possible.
By trial and error—trying things, making mistakes, and learning from those mistakes—we have figured out how to make electric light, to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, to fly.
Mistakes make walking possible for the smallest toddler, make speech possible, make works of genius possible.
Think about how we learn: we don’t just consume information about so mthing and instantly know it or know how to do it. You don’t just read about painting, or writing, or computer programming, or baking, or playing the piano, and know how to do them right away. Instead, you get information about something, from reading or from another person or from observing, then you make mistakes and repeat, making mistakes, learning from those mistakes, until you’ve pretty much learned how to do something. That’s how we learn as babies and toddlers, and how we learn as adults. Mistakes are how we learn to do something new—because if you succeed at something, it’s probably something you already knew how to do. You haven’t really grown much from that success—at most it’s the last step on your journey, not the whole journey. Most of the journey was made up of mistakes, if it’s a good journey.
So if you value learning, if you value growing and improving, then you should value mistakes. They are amazing things that make a world of brilliance possible.
28. Why do most of us feel bad about making mistakes?
A. Because mistakes make us suffer a lot.
B. Because it’s a natural part in our life.
C. Because we’ve been taught so from a young age.
D. Because mistakes have ruined many people’s careers.
29. According to the passage, what is the right attitude to mistakes?
A. We should try to avoid making mistakes.
B. We should owe great inventions mainly to mistakes.
C. We should treat mistakes as good chances to learn.
D. We should make feeling bad about mistakes an unconscious reaction.
30. The underlined word “toddler” in Paragraph 6 probably means .
A. a small child learning to walk B. a kindergarten child learning to draw
C. a primary pupil learning to read D. a school teenager learning to write
31. We can learn from the passage that .
A. most of us can really grow from success
B. growing and improving are based on mistakes
C. we learn to make mistakes by trial and error
D. we read about something and know how to do it right away

The Human Camera
There is not anybody else quite like Stephen Wiltshire. Born in 1974, Stephen was always different. 36 In fact, he talked to nobody, showed no interest in school subjects and wasn’t able to sit still. Stephen was later told that he had autism(自閉癥). He didn’t learn fully to talk until he was nine years old and he didn’t manage to pass his exams. 37 Art became his way to communicate.
He started by drawing funny pictures of his teachers, but soon began to draw buildings. His eye for detail was perfect. He could see a building just once and remember everything about it. 38 Hours later, in front of TV cameras, he managed to draw this building, with the time on the station clock saying 11:20, the exact time when he was there. The television program made him famous overnight in the UK.
39 He has become a well-known artist, published four books of his drawings, taken helicopter(直升機(jī)) rides above the world’s great cities and drawn amazing pictures of them, and opened his own art gallery, where he now works, in London.
His drawings are correct and true in every detail--he always manages to draw everything in the right place. 40 In 2006, he was given an MBE(Member of the Order British Empire) by the Queen of England for services to art.
A. Floating Cities was his third book.
B. As a child, he couldn’t make friends.
C. Besides, they are also beautiful to look at.
D. Luckily he found one thing he liked doing: drawing.
E. After that, many great things have happened to Stephen.
F. In 1987, he saw a train station in London called St Pancras.
G. On 15 February 2008, ABC News named him Person of the Week.

Dear Jim,
I am glad that you are interested in Chinese culture and eager to explore more about it. In your letter ,you asked me for some advice on what elective course you should take in this term. The following is my advice.
I think the Ancient Poetry is your best choice. By learning Chinese ancient poems, you can have an extensive(廣泛的) knowledge of history and culture in ancient China. Also, you can feel the charm of the language by reading poems, which is sure to help to improve your Chinese. To follow the course well, you’d better read and recite as many poems as possible. Besides, it is a good idea to search for related background knowledge so that you will fully understand the conception of poetry.
What you do think of the course? I am sure you will have a lot of fun from it.

Emotional eating is when people use food as a way to deal with feelings instead of to satisfy hunger. We've all been there, finishing a whole bag of chips or eating cookie after cookie while preparing for a coming exam. But when done a lot—especially without realizing it—emotional eating can affect weight, health, and well-being.
One of the biggest beliefs about emotional eating is that it's caused by negative feelings.Yes,people often turn to food when they're stressed out, lonely, sad, anxious,or bored.Nevertheless, emotional eating can be linked to positive feelings too, like the romance of sharing dessert on Valentine's Day or the celebration of a holiday feast.More often, though,it's the countless little daily stresses that cause someone to seek comfort or relaxation in food.
We all have our own comfort foods.Amazingly, they may vary according to moods and sex.One study found that happy people seem to want to eat things like pizza, while sad people prefer ice cream and cookies.Bored people desire salty, fragile things, like chips.Girls go for chocolate and ice cream.
This brings up a curious question: Does no one take comfort in carrots and cabbages?Researchers are looking into that, too. What they're finding is that high-fat foods, like ice cream, may activate certain chemicals in the body that create a sense of contentment and fulfillment, which may actually make you reach for these foods again when feeling upset.
We're all emotional eaters to some extent. But for some people, emotional eating can be a real problem, causing serious problems such as weight gain.
Managing emotional eating means finding other ways to deal with the situations and feelings that make someone turn to food. For example,do you come home from school each day and automatically head to the kitchen? Stop and ask yourself,“Am I really hungry?” Are you having difficulty concentrating? If these signs point to hunger, choose something light and healthy to take the edge off until dinner.

Guests arriving at the Aloft Hotel in Manhattan or one in Silicon Valley will soon be able to do something hotels have dreamed about offering for years: walk past the check-in desk and enter their rooms by using a smartphone as a room key. The boutique hotel brand from Starwood to
Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc. plans to offer this feature at two hotels, in the Harle neighborhood and in Cupertino, Calif, before the end of the quarter.
Starwood officials are hoping this will be one of the biggest technological changes in the industry since free Wi-Fi. "We believe this will become the new standard for how people will want to enter a hotel." says Frits van Passchen, Starwood's CEO. "It may be a novelty at first, but we think it will become table stakes for managing a hotel.
Not everyone is so sure. Past attempts to use technology to streamline the check-in process have had mixed results. Robert Habeeb, president of the First Hospitality Group, which is the owner of 55 hotels in the U.S, says he pulled out check-in kiosks at two of his Holiday Inn hotels after finding that most guests ignored them. He found that many travelers will sacrifice speed or ease to talk with a staff member and ensure their room has the right view or location, or to try for an upgrade. Other guests may still want to be greeted when they arrive.
Hotels have never been known for being in the forefront of technology. The industry is often a delay, in part because many hotels are owned and managed by separate companies, making investments in technology more complicated. Nevertheless, many hotel operators have been searching for ways to remove the bottlenecks that can form at a hotel's front desk. The delays are the bane(禍根)of many a road warrior's travel experience. “Everybody has to check in, but we are all doing it pretty much the same way we were 100 years ago, ”says Christopher Nassetta, chief executive officer for Hilton Worldwide holdings Inc.“It' s something we are seriously addressing.
Yet it is still not clear that virtual keys will do better than previous attempts to beat traditional check-ins. An effort several years ago to allow guests to enter rooms with the magnetic strip on their credit cards never became popular . Guests worried about security and were unwilling to give their kids credit cards instead of room keys.

Traditionally, across the world, boys and girls attend a mixed school, where they study together. But boys' schools are the perfect place to teach young men to express their emotions and involve them in activities such as art, dance and music.
Boys at single-sex schools were said to be more likely to get involved in cultural and artistic activities that helped develop their emotional expressiveness, rather than feeling they had to correspond to(和……相符) the “boy code” of hiding their emotions to be a “real man”.
The findings of the study go against received wisdom that boys do better when taught alongside girls.
Tony Little, headmaster of Eton, warned that boys were being failed by the British education system because it had become too focused on girls. He criticized teachers for failing to recognize that boys are actually more emotional than girls.
The research argued that boys often perform badly in mixed schools because they become discouraged when girls do better earlier in speaking and reading skills.
But in single-sex schools teachers can tailor lessons to boys' learning style, letting them move around the classroom and getting them to compete in teams to prevent boredom, wrote the study's author,Abigail James,of the University of Virginia.
Teachers could encourage boys to enjoy reading and writing with “boy-focused” approaches such as themes and characters that appeal to them.Because boys generally have more acute vision, learn best through touch, and are physically more active, they need to be given “hands-on” lessons where they are allowed to walk around.“Boys in mixed schools view classical music as feminine (女性的) and prefer the modern genre (類型) in which violence and sexism are major themes,” James wrote.
Single-sex education also made it less likely that boys would feel that they had to be “masterful and in charge” in relationships. “In mixed schools, boys feel forced to act like men before they understand themselves well enough to know what that means,” the study reported.
13.The author believes that a single-sex school would ______.
A.encourage boys to express their emotions more freely
B.force boys to hide their emotions to be “real men”

D.naturally strengthen boys' traditional image of a man
