  1.The modern city

  The modern city的作者是法國(guó)著名外科醫(yī)生Alexis Carrel(同時(shí)他也是1912年諾貝爾生理學(xué)或醫(yī)學(xué)獎(jiǎng)獲得者),新四的這篇文章選自他的書(shū)籍Man, the Unknown,書(shū)中主要討論了現(xiàn)代社會(huì)面臨的主要問(wèn)題以及作者對(duì)此的解決方案。

  The modern city consists of monstrous edifices and of dark, narrow streets full of petrol fumes and toxic gases, torn by the noise of the taxicabs, lorries and buses, and thronged ceaselessly by great crowds. Obviously, it has not been planned for the good of its inhabitants.

  第一個(gè)長(zhǎng)句中torn by…buses以及thronged…crowds是過(guò)去分詞作定語(yǔ)修飾前面的streets,句子用了一系列形容詞和動(dòng)詞來(lái)說(shuō)明城市存在的各種問(wèn)題:monstrous edifices,dark, narrow streets,torn by the noise,thronged ceaselessly by great crowds,從這里的用詞也可以很明顯地看出作者對(duì)大城市的感情,比如monstrous一詞雖然可以用來(lái)形容物體巨大,但它通常帶有貶義,例如: a monstrous copper edifice 又大又難看的銅制建筑物,如果我們想要表達(dá)“大廈宏偉壯觀”這一積極含義,就不能說(shuō)a monstrous edifice,而要說(shuō)an imposing edifice

Tourists thronged the bars and restaurants.

  The modern city consists of monstrous edifices and of dark, narrow streets full of petrol fumes and toxic gases, torn by the noise of the taxicabs, lorries and buses, and full of great crowds.

  2.Snake poison

  How it came about that snakes manufactured poison is a mystery. Over the periods their saliva, a mild, digestive juice like our own, was converted into a poison that defies analysis even today.

  第二句中a mild, digestive juice like our own是作為名詞saliva的同位語(yǔ),a poison that defies analysis even today其中that引導(dǎo)定語(yǔ)從句,修飾a poison(poison在此處是可數(shù)名詞,表示“具體的某種毒液”,句子前面還出現(xiàn)了 manufactured poison 的說(shuō)法,這里poison則是不可數(shù)名詞,泛指“毒液”)

類(lèi)似的我們還可以說(shuō)defy description/explanation,例如:The beauty of the scene defies description.

  She failed to win the gold medal.

  The gold medal eluded her.

  He felt a sense of victory.

  Victory filled him.

  3.Knowledge and progress

  Libraries made education possible, and education in its turn added to libraries: the growth of knowledge followed a kind of compound interest law, which was greatly enhanced by the invention of printing.

  As is so often pointed out, knowledge is a two-edged weapon which can be used equally for good or evil. It is now being used indifferently for both.

  上面第一個(gè)句子中as作為關(guān)系代詞,指代knowledge is a…or evil這一整句話。Something is a two-edged weapon which can be used equally for good or evil.

  We have to ask ourselves very seriously what will happen if this twofold use of knowledge, with its ever-increasing power, continues.
