You have heard the expression “horse sense”. As you may imagine, it came from the time when the majority of people traveled in vehicles drawn by horses. A horse does have a lot of common sense, and there are many true stories about horses having saved their drivers from danger of death.

Today for the most part, people travel by train, ship, airplane, and car, but very little by the Use of horses. Modem vehicles are propelled by engines, and an engine does not have any sense. In case of danger, many horses could be depended on to help. Not so with the engine; the driver must do all the things.

In recent years, the speed of travel has increased greatly. With the increased speed comes greatly increased danger. The driver of a powerful engine needs to be careful. A moment of being careless may cost a life. In order to drive today, a person must be able to see clearly, and he must learn and follow carefully the rules for safety on the road. Greater attention is the price we pay for using a machine instead of a horse.

  25. The passage mainly talks about ______.

  A. engines B. safe driving

  C. using horses D. modern machines

  26. The underlined word “propel” in the second paragraph means ______.

  A. repair B. raise C. push forward D. made

  27. It can be inferred from the passage that ______.

  A. a driver must know the rules of safety

  B. a driver needs to be able only to tell red from green

  C. an eye test is an important part of a driver’s examination

  D. greater attention is needed for a driver while driving a machine

  28. Which of the following is NOT true?

  A. A driver must be able to see and hear well.

  B. The driver of a ear must follow the rules of safety.

  C. Horses are known to have saved their drivers from injury.

  D. It is better for vehicles to be pulled by horse than to be pushed by engine.

  [C]

Sleeping in is one of the best parts of the weekend. After a long, exhausting work week, sometimes all you want to do is sleep. On Friday night, you slide under the covers, smiling in anticipation. Now you can finally catch up on your sleep.

Except you can’t. When you open your eyes Saturday morning, it’s still early. If this were a weekday, you’d be up before y our alarm. So what’s the deal?

We hate to break it to you, but you’ve pretty much done this to yourself. Your body is very good at recognizing patterns and adjusting accordingly. If you’ve got a 9-to-5 job, you’re getting up early five days a week. This effectively sets your body clock to wake you at a certain time each day. You can shut off your alarm clock, but your body clock will just keep ticking.

There’s another reason that you probably don’t want to think about: You’re just not as young as you used to be. We need less sleep as we get older. B abies need between 16 and 20 hours. Teenagers should (but often don’t) get nine hours a night. Younger and middle-aged adults need eight. In general, the older you get, the harder it is to snooze the day away.

Even if you do manage to sleep in, you may never fully catch up on your sleep. If your body needs eight hours every night and you only get six or seven from Monday to Friday, you’d have to sleep an extra five to ten hours on Saturday to make it up. And experts say even that may not be enough.

The bottom line: Sleep when you can, and enjoy those extra weekend morning hours. Who doesn’t want a longer weekend?

  29. What does the underlined sentence mean in Paragraph 1?

  A. You know that you will oversleep on Saturday morning.

  B. You needn’t get up early on Saturday morning, so you will have a better sleep.

  C. Since you don’t work on Saturday, you needn’t go to sleep as usual.

  D. You know that even though you needn’t get up early on Saturday morning, you will wake as usual.

  30. What can we learn from Paragraph 3?

  A. If you have a 9-to-5 job, you are likely to develop a flexible body clock.

  B. Once you have set your body clock, it is not easy to change it.

  C. The author will not break the pattern, but you will do it yourself.

  D. If you adjust your body clock accordingly, you are healthy.

  31. Which of the following is the reason why you can’t sleep in on weekends?

  A. You are not willing to admit that you are old.

  B. You need to relax on the weekend.

  C. Your body clock still works on weekends.

  D. You can never get enough sleep.

  32. Which is the best title of the passage?

  A. Why can't I sleep in on weekends anymore?

  B. Why can’t I catch up on my sleep?

  C. How to turn off my body clock on Saturdays?

  D. How to get more sleep on Saturday mornings?

  Public Speaking Training

  •Get a coach

36 ,so get help. Since there are about a billion companies out there all ready to offer you public speaking training and courses, here are some things to look for when deciding the training that's right for you.

  •Focus on positives

Any training you do to become more effective at public speaking should always focus on the positive aspects of what you already do well. Nothing can hurt confidence more than being told that you aren't doing well. 37 , so good public speaking training should develop those instead of telling you what you shouldn't do.

  • 38

If you find a public speaking course that looks as though it's going to give you lots of dos and don'ts, walk away! Your brain is so full of what you're going to be talking about.

39 . As far as we're concerned, there are basically no hard and fast r ules about public speaking. Your audience can be your friends.

•You are a special person not a clone

Most importantly, good public speaking training should treat you as a special one, with your own personal habits. 40 . Your training course should help you bring out your personality, not try to turn you into someone you're not.

  A. You aren't like anybody else

  B. You already do lots of things well

  C. Turn your back on too many rules

  D. Check the rules about dos and don'ts

  E. Whatever the presentation, public speaking is tough

F .The one thing you don't want is for them to fall asleep

  第二節(jié)書面表達( 滿分25分)

  Dear editor,

I’m writing to tell you about the discussion we have had about whether an entrance fee should be charged for parks. Sixty students out of one hundred think that an entrance fee should not be bought before one enters a park, for it is a place for the public to go to when they are free. If a ticket must be bought, a gate and walls have to be built for a park, which will make a city look ugly. Forty students out of one hundred think that an entrance fee should be bought before one enters a park, but the price of the ticket should be reasonable. Money that is got from ticket selling can be used to pay the gardening workers and buy different kinds of flowers and trees.

As for myself, I really think parks are good places to go to at weekends and on holidays. At the same time, we, as visitors, should pay the entrance fee when we enter a park. After all, it takes a lot of money to maintain a park in good working order. Do you agree with me, dear editor?

  Yours truly
